Medical Oversight

Medical control, medical direction, medical oversight . . . all terms that have been used to describe the EMS physician.

The EMS physician comes in two varieties.

One is the physician or physician designee that gives direction to the EMT via a communication device (phone, radio, etc.) or while actually on scene. This is called direct medical direction (oversight) or on-line medical direction (oversight).

The second is 'indirect medical direction (oversight)' or 'off-line medical direction (oversight)' and is the physician responsible for the overall medical care provided by the EMS service. This is the type of EMS physician discussed in this tutorial.

On-line and off-line are older terms for direct and indirect medical direction (oversight).
